The Legislature has gone to lunch on the final day of the session. Heated debate has led to a filibuster on LB388, the Pillen tax shift. Senator Dover dares us to tell them where to start cutting spending as he claims no one really wants to stop the spending.
πββοΈ If you have any ideas you’d like to share with him, feel free to email rdover@leg.ne.gov
Of course, Senator Erdman is the only sound voice on the floor. We all see this for what it is, a “decrease in the increase,” one that won’t bring the kind of tax relief that the everyday hardworking Nebraskans desperately need.
In a laughing turn of events, Linehan justifies the increase in pop, candy, cigarettes, and CBD sales with the bold claim that you can’t spend $2000 annually on these items.
Certainly, for those who don’t purchase these items, it seems inconsequential… maybe some of these senators don’t do their own shopping, but the cost of these things have already skyrocketed! A large portion of our populations’ diet includes large quantities of pop and candy. Anyone who smokes cigarettes is spending $2000 in about 4-6 months. Anyone who purchases CBD products is likely spending more. Those creams/sprays/etc are NOT cheap.
Either way, they’re picking winners and losers. It may be a good move for the health of Nebraskans (even though that’s not their job) as many will just stop buying these things. Then where will their additional revenue come from?
LB388 has been tabled at this point. The introducer abruptly asked for the bill to be moved in the middle of debate on Slama’s floor amendment, and Speaker Arch agreed.
It looks as though a special session for taxes is inevitable.
Now’s a good time to email our senators and tell them we want EPIC Option! They need to eliminate the tax burden and put the power back with the people. Encourage them to work with Senator Erdman and move us towards a real fix!
Go to a special session, and get it right! πΊπ²
